This address has been the location of gas stations (or, to use an earlier term, filling stations) since the 1920s, well before the current building was erected in 1980. According to the Lynchburg City Directory, this was the location of the following businesses: from 1924-1925 this was the Indian Refining Co. Service Station #1, from 1926-1936 Standard Oil Co. of NJ Filling Station, from 1937-1938 L.O. Miles & Co. filling station, in 1939 Bob & John Frank filling station, from 1940-1944 and again from 1948-1955 Rivermont Esso Station, from 1945-1947 Leonard Miles filling station, from 1956-1972 Rivermont Esso Servicenter, from 1973-1988 Rivermont Exxon Servicenter, from 1989-2001 Rivermont Exxon Service Station, and from 2002-2006 Rivermont Exxon.
