Style & Architectural Description
Early 20th-century Commercial. 2-story, 3-bay wide, 5-bay deep, gable-front brick building with a stepped parapet. Second-story windows on main facade have segmental arches (only one original sash remains.) Sides of the building feature stepped parapet walls. Ribbon windows below belt course have been painted or covered with sign board.

Anecdotal Information
As with all building in both commercial strips on Rivermont Avenue, this building has served a variety of functions over the years. According to the Lynchburg City Directory, from 1907-1909 this was D.C. Drinkbard Co. groceries, in 1911 C.D. Shaner, in 1912 Blankeship Brothers Co., in 1915 Sams & Royster groceries. After years as a grocery store from 1920-1922 this was William N. and Henry W. Lovelace Shoemakers, from 1923-1924 Rivermont Electric Shoe Repair Co., from 1924-1932 Rivermont Dry Cleaning & Dye Works, and from 1928-1930 Pender's Stores (grocery store) and then from 1932-1933, Kroger Grocery & Baking Co. From 1934-1940 this was The Avenue Grill Restaurant, from 1934-1964 Rivermont Dry Cleaning Co., from 1969-1970 Rivermont Supply Co., from 1971-1973 Piedmont Supply Co., and from 1980-1986 Swap Shop. In 1992 this was the Randolph Merchandise Shop, from 1994-1997 Three in One Electric, from 1998-2007 Nubian Citi beauty shop and from 2010-2013 Cutter's, a barbershop . As of the summer of 2020 the building houses the Victory Vocational Institute, part of the Virginia Technical Institute.
